MOUNT VERNON POLICE DEPARTMENT
On Sunday, September 20, 2009, at approximately 7:37pm, four juveniles (ages 14-17) were walking in the area of Broadway and 20th Street. A beige1995 Ford Explorer drove past their location.
As the juveniles continued in the 500 Block of S 20th Street, the Ford Explorer passed them again with passenger window rolled down. The driver of the vehicle fired shots toward the juveniles. Witnesses described the weapon as a handgun.
A 17-year-old male was struck in the torso and taken to Skagit Valley Hospital where he was treated. The injuries were not life threatening. No one else was injured; however, a pick-up truck parked in the area was also struck.
A short time later, the unoccupied 1995 Ford Explorer was located at Hillcrest Park. Skagit County Sheriff's Office K-9 was called in to assist with a track but the suspect was not located.
Investigators learned the victim and suspect have lived near each other for several years. During that time, there have been conflicts between them and their families. At this point, investigators do not believe gang rivalries are involved; however, it has not been ruled out.
No arrests have been made.
Anyone who may have witnessed Sunday's incident, or has information about this case, is encouraged to contact the Mount Vernon Police Department at (360) 336-6271.
