The purpose of the Academy is to encourage high school students to pursue
policing as a career and to promote the Mount Vernon Police Department as the
agency of choice. While attending the Academy, participates will:
- Learn what it takes to become a Police Officer
- Learn what it is like to be a Mount Vernon Police Officer
- Learn about the Mount Vernon Police Department
- Become familiar with the Department's policing philosophy
The classes are taught by Police Officers, Department personnel, and guest
speakers. Topics include the Department's Vision, Mission, Goals, and Values;
Hiring Process; Police Tactical Operations; Ethics; Use of Force; Criminal
Investigations; Constitutional Law and more. Students ride along with a Police
Officer while on patrol and participate in several hands-on activities. Upon
completion of the Academy, a graduation ceremony will be held at the Mount
Vernon Police Department.
