Jasper Gates Statue Project
Jasper Gates Statue ProjectBack

Jasper Gates was the first man to file a homestead claim on property where the City of Mount Vernon would later be established. He remained during his lifetime to help with the development of the city and county. The proposed site for the life-size statue is located on the corner of First and Gates Streets. This was the original site of Gate's first cabin and garden. This project was conceived by historian Dick Fallis of Mount Vernon and made a reality by the Mount Vernon Arts Commission and artist Tracy Powell of Anacortes.

*Update as of 9/26/05: He is almost here! Jasper is scheduled to be placed in his final home this coming Friday on September 30th! Tracy Powell has just completed the nearly 7 ton statue and it will be placed in downtown Mount Vernon on Gates Street. Please stop by and visit this beautiful piece of artwork!
