Fire Department - Home PageBack

Being both the most visible and invisible department in the City, the Mount Vernon Fire Department provides rapid response to fire, rescue, medical, and hazardous materials emergencies.  The three strategically located stations are staffed with experienced, well-trained career firefighter-emergency medical technicians who are on duty 24/7.  These firefighters maintain 90% call-to-arrival time of 6 minutes, and respond to approximately 3,900 calls per year.

The Department maintains an educational and prevention role throughout the community through a dedicated Fire Prevention Bureau.  The Fire Prevention personnel provide fire and life safety education for the public school system, community business, professional associations, and assisted living centers. Those are the visible things we do.

The invisible operations of the Fire Department include cooperative work with the planning and building departments in order to provide a safe community.  Building design and construction standards, access and egress standards for streets, hydrant and water supply location and maintenance, sprinkler and alarm system requirements, hazard identification and abatement, outdoor burning and fireworks regulation are all part of the invisible work provided by department staff.

If there is one message I could send everyone as the single most important thing you can do to prevent tragedy where you live, it is this:  Make sure you have at least one working smoke alarm on each floor of your residence.  If you rent, insist that your landlord provide them, it's the law.  A smoke alarm or fire extinguisher makes an excellent gift, and nothing shows you genuinely care for someone more than your concern for their life!
