Can I operate a business from my home?

There are three types of Home Occupation Permits:

Type I Home Occupation: A Type I home occupation shall exhibit no evidence that a business is being conducted from the premises. The fee for the Type I Home Occupation is $15.00. 

Type II Home Occupation: A Type II home occupation may show evidence that a business is being conducted from the premises and will allow no more than one outside employee or volunteer; signage no larger than two square feet attached to the residence, or placed in the window; no more than six clients per day, (or a group of not more than eight people); in addition to the parking required for the residents, no more than two vehicles parked on or in the vicinity as a result of the business at any one time; and materials, goods, or equipment must be stored inside. The fee for a Type II Home Occupation is $25.00.

Home Occupation Exemption: Certain activities qualify for this exemption. Please refer to MVMC 17.96.040 under Code Amendments on the Community & Economic Development page for a list of exemptions.

What is the average review time for a building permit?
Currently, the review time for a residentail building permit is 5 days, and 10 days for a commercial building permit. Factors such as complete applications, landscaping, design review, and peak building periods may increase review time.
Are setbacks required for storage sheds?
A storage or garden shed under 200 square feet is not required to have a building permit, but must have a  minimum setback of 5 feet from each property line.
