MOUNT VERNON POLICE DEPARTMENT
On Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at approximately 12:10 AM, a motorist travelling northbound on Interstate 5 just north of Exit 226 (Kincaid Street) in Mount Vernon observed a male lying in the roadway. The driver stopped to assist and contacted emergency services.
Mount Vernon Police, Washington State Patrol and medical crews responded to the scene. The victim was unresponsive and was determined to be deceased.
He was observed shortly before the incident walking on the viaduct that crosses over Interstate 5 just north of Exit 226 by a Skagit County Deputy passing through the area. Detectives are trying to locate a witness who may have observed the individual jump from the viaduct onto the freeway.
It appears the victim may have been struck by a passing motorist after the fall.
The victim was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital for examination and an autopsy will be scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
Limited information about the victim and the circumstances surrounding this incident are available at this time. The victim appears to be a male in his early to mid 20's and our investigation is continuing.
Anyone who was in the area who may have observed this incident is encouraged to contact the Mount Vernon Police Department at (360) 336-6271.
